My name is Ali Cushing and I am nothing if not multifaceted. A former professional ballerina and self taught artist, I studied Political Science at University of Washington in Seattle, moved to New York City to pursue a career in law and academia, yet followed my instincts and reverted back to my creative roots working in the film industry and as a freelance illustrator, graphic designer, and photographer.
I’ve always thought of myself as both an observer and a conjurer; noticing the interesting angle of architectural elements that line up just right, the subtle and intimate expressions of strangers on the subway, the glory of the expanse and minute details of wilderness across the country; I absorb it all with keen interest and ever renewed intrigue. At the same time, through illustration, concept art, and creative direction, I relish in taking little to nothing, and building worlds, crafting perspectives, and evoking feelings. I find myself lucky, to find beauty in simple things as much as grandness; dark and moody elements, as well as vibrant and bright, as well as to get to conceptualize it into being. I try to bring the character out of any given subject, no matter what the narrative, aesthetic style or mode of work it offers.
As such I am always seeking opportunities to explore different facets and light and in collaboration. While my focus has shifted dramatically towards photographing weddings, which has been a fantastic application of my observing and creative impulses, I still work in an array of capacities, I am grateful to still be involved with illustration, film, and literary projects during off-peek seasons. In every way I believe this makes me a stronger photographer.
